Thinking of getting your boiler replaced?
Why might I need to consider new boiler installation?
- Your boiler is no longer efficient enough – older systems are naturally less efficient, meaning higher energy bills. Many boilers were only around 60% efficient when installed, and that will have reduced further over the years. All new boilers must have an ErP efficiency rating of 92% or higher, making them cheaper to run and safer too.
- Your boiler needs regular repairs and is no longer under warranty – like anything, boilers show wear and tear over time. If yours is no longer covered by a warranty and you’re paying for repairs regularly, it might be time to look at a new boiler instead.
- The boiler has been condemned and is irreparable – if a Gas Safe engineer has condemned your boiler, it could be dangerous or not combusting properly, which can release fumes into your home. If it’s been switched off and deemed irreparable, the next step is a quote for a new installation – another reason regular servicing matters, as problems like this are picked up sooner.
- Parts are no longer available – the most common reason for needing a new boiler is that older systems no longer have parts available for repair. It might seem cheaper to repair a broken boiler, but if the parts aren’t manufactured any more, that’s not an option.

Often known as conventional, traditional or heat-only boilers, these are linked to a water cylinder and need space in a loft or similar area for two storage tanks – one for central heating, one for hot water. This type is generally found in older houses with a more traditional system.
